I think I’ll go to Boston…

Hi all! Sorry I’ve been so quiet lately. I’ve been getting settled into the “big girl” living world mixed with a nice family reunion get-a-way plopped right in the middle. I’d say I’m adjusting pretty well to the 9-6 routine. The first week was rough. I had some anxiety thinking oh my gosh, how am I going to be at a desk all day? Am I going to gain a ton of weight? Will I be too tired to workout? All the usual stuff any fitness fanatic would stress about.

Now that I’m nestling into my work environment (Oh and have a chill, awesome boss) I’m able to jog or go to the gym in our complex during lunch. Most days I just go for a long walk, but today I had a 3 hour acting class following work and really needed to fit in that jog. I swear, no one should have excuses to not be active. If you want it bad enough, you’ll make it happen.

So, now to the main reason why I began typing this blog..I finally took a trip to Boston. My sisters, boyfriend and I flew up to NH on Friday and spent the rest of the time in the Boston. It’s such a gorgeous city.  The culture of the city was unreal. It was a mix of art, history, fashion and damn good bread. ( I know, I know, “NY is better.) But hey I’m used to FL. We don’t rank.

As I walked  through the city, freezing my ass off, but of course loving every minute of it, I noticed everyone was in fairly good shape. Why? THEY WALK. Wow. The bit of activeness makes such an extreme difference. Unbelievable. I really wish Tampa could have passed that public transportation bill. We have such an advantage being in Florida and having weather where we can be outside all year. If public transportation was available, we would walk and voila, fit and fab.

Here we are walking through Boston. Everyone kept insisting it was a beautiful night. To any Floridian 35 degrees with a wind chill isn’t favorable.

If the NorthEast region had weather like here or Cali, I’d totally move there in a heart beat. Overall, an awesome city that I’ll definitely be visiting during the spring/summer.

Time for bed. I need some serious gym time tomorrow so lots of sleep is crucial tonight <3

Strive Athletic Club

Strive Athletic Club. Where to start? I think I know a good place. Let’s start at price. $35 month to month membership. What’s the first thought that comes to mind? Perhaps, “couldn’t be that nice for a price like that.” A logical thought, but wrong. This gym is sicker than I ever could have imagined.

I actually found Strive while doing a google search to find a solid boxing class. After scamming their site for a bit, I saw that this place had a lot to offer (classes, 1-1 training, TRX bands, cross fit etc. etc. etc) The first night I walked in I thought to myself, “I’m officially in a playground for adults, who love fitness of course.” All state-of-the-art equipment, certified trainers, who happen to be the top of the line in their field of specialization and best of all, a pleased clientele.

The owner is great because he ACTUALLY CARES. Can you believe it? Someone in the fitness industry who actually doesn’t make a living by ripping people off? It is a rare, beautiful thing. This guy, John, he really wants to see people get better and attain a higher quality of life through health and fitness. He charges people this low price for the use of these amenities because he understands times are tough and health shouldn’t be sacrificed no matter what your bank account digits look like. This is a perfect place for someone like myself who doesn’t have an extra couple hundred dollars lying around ready to blow.

So here are some pictures of this place. If you live in this area, definitely check it out. When you come in you can have a 7-day guest pass to see how the place runs and get a feel before spending all that money every month (joke) $35/month..COME ON! (No I don’t work here…I just get really excited when I believe in something)

ALWAYS stand up for yourself

I love to inform you all with what goes on in my life as much as possible so I thought I’d share the latest news…I am no longer employed with my previous employer. Tonight I experienced a bit of a fall out with the “manager” and decided standing up for myself was more important than having a position with that company. I am not the type of person who can deal with mediocracy nor can I deal with a negative work environment. From day one I knew there were “rats” and I knew there were people that played unfair. Remember to always do what is in your best interest. Do not let people talk to you like you are inferior to them. We are all equals and no one should have the right to undermine you. I may have a bumpy path ahead of me because I am strong willed and know what I deserve but I am ready. Every place I go and everything I do is part of who I am. It is a growing experience. In this particular situation I learned how NOT to run a company and learned that I will never be a dishonest, pushy sales person nor will I be a “pushy” trainer. I want people to WANT to train with me because of who I am and the results I can give them..I don’t ever want to be a trainer that has to try and convince people to work with me. That place just wasn’t for me….. Anyway I’ll keep you updated with my work ventures.

Love you all

xoxo Sarah

Life After College

I graduated 1 month ago today. Still haven’t received my degree in the mail..I guess 10,000 students graduating all at one time makes it a bit difficult to get them all sent out in a timely fashion. Anyway, I got the job that I wanted working at a fitness studio (No, I’m currently not looking to use my degree) I made my first real world mistake a few weeks ago and told my new boss I had no life when he asked my availability. Now I really have no life. lol. I’ve got to learn to filter some of the personal content I release from my mouth. Even though I’m swamped with hours I have to say I love working with all of the clients. I’m not in the “coach” position YET but working towards it. Starting at the bottom of the totem pole working my way up. One day I’ll have my own fitness world. It’s an awesome feeling to know I am going to work and can positively impact someones life.

That’s my update with life. I’m working on a longer blog post about new fitness trends and will have it posted within the next week.

Stay tuned.

What Kind of Trainer Are You?

What Kind of Trainer Are You?At the end of the day, you want to be happy with what you accomplished. You want to  know that you are doing what you love. At the end of the day, I want to know that I am really helping people achieve greatness in their life. Isn’t that what being a personal trainer is about?

Lately, I have witnessed trainers who lack substance. Now, don’t get me wrong, these trainers are far more experienced than I, but for some odd reason they don’t give off “the vibe.”

What “vibe” you may think…the Jillian vibe….the Bob Harper vibe…the Billy Blanks….Gunnar Peterson..the trainers I interact with everyday on Twitter vibe. ;) It’s the line between a good trainer and an unforgettable one. How does one achieve this aura you ask? CARING.

If you train someone who is 50+ pounds overweight and the person is either losing little to no weight, something is wrong. These people are coming to you to lose weight. They are paying you to lose that extra fat and regain control in their life. To be an unforgettable trainer you MUST MUST MUST help them make that dream a reality.

I’m sure the workout is awesome. I’m sure tons of calories are being burned so why aren’t they losing weight? Simple answer that I am sure every trainer knows…because abs are revealed in the kitchen. Sure we can’t go home with these people and watch what they stuff in their face at night. We can’t know for sure if their food logs are 100% accurate. What we can do is be their friends. Be our client’s accountability partners.

Freshman year of college I gained 20 something pounds. I was letting myself go because of an obsession with food. I thought about food non stop. It was an addiction. When I came home over spring break, I had a nice little wake up call from my mother and sisters. One sunny day as I ate a plain waffle cone as a snack, I was walking out the front door in that perfect lighting to show off my cellulite when my sister said, “Uh Sarah, you should put that waffle cone down, your cellulite is bad.” That was my breaking point.

I guess you could say that was a harsh comment but guess what? I got my butt to start doing cardio again and stopped eating refined sugars and lard when I was feeling down. My mother and sisters have been my critics since as long as I can remember. This past Christmas I did really well with self-control. I didn’t gorge myself therefore I didn’t gain weight. My mom on the other hand was drinking bottles of wine and eating pies at 1 am, she obviously did gain weight.
At the end of Christmas break my sister had to break my mom the bad news and tell her it was time to lose the fat before it was too late.

We all get a little devastated at first..we all get a little angry at the person who informed us we resemble a mini whale, but in the end we love them for it. Unfortunately, not everyone has accountability partners. That’s why us trainers are here. We are here to mentor and build trusting relationships with our clients We need to help them understand that we will be there for them through that weight-loss journey. Don’t feed me the bull crap that we are not nutritionists..we are not certified to give advice about diets…that’s crap. We are not fit because of a personal nutritionist following us around on a daily basis, we are fit because we know what works. We know the formula. It’s simple. So simple. Burn more than you eat. Eat foods to keep you full. Yes, it is simple for us, but guess what? It is not for them.

Give out your Facebook account, provide them with your Twitter, cell number, home phone..anything that can get them in touch with you if they happen to have a moment of weakness. They can reach you if they are food shopping and have no clue what to get. Go with them! By spending a little more time with your clients, you’ll see your rate of success from word-of-mouth recommendations sky rocket. People need caring trainers.

So what kind of trainer are you?
